What calculator should I get for college? I am going to be a freshman (planning on going into nursing) in the fall and need a calculator. TI 89 is highly recommended for math majors, but it's rather expensive. We have a TI 85 my dad used when he went to college, but I find it abstruse. Is the TI 89 version used frequently in college or is there an earlier version that could be used instead? Could this also be an investment to my 2 younger brothers? (22 months and 6 years younger)
Any good sources for finance/investment tips for teens and young adults? Not only am I interested in this myself, but my boss has asked me to start compiling some helpful information regarding this. She wants to start a program that will help young people become "financially literate". I'm just having trouble finding some good material to use in a packet. I have a couple things like a budget calculator sheet and some tips to stay in budget, but I need some info on investment and financial planning.
Would a graphical calculator be a decent investment? If so, which one? Hi, It's the start of another school year and we've just launched into our Core 3 Maths work; 'arduous' doesn't do justice. My teacher let us in on a secret that we can use a graphical calculator for Cores 2, 3 and 4 exams. Ambivalence: does the digital assistance outweigh the (supposed) steep cost of purchasing one of these? As I'm wanting to do Maths at University, then I can't help but feel that the benefits DO outweigh the costs. It's my birthday in a couple weeks, so my mum has said that if I want/need it, she can get me one as a birthday present, which made sense to me. So, I wanted to ask a number of things- some of which already asked above and I have nearly already answered them, lol. So, how much would I be looking to spend? Where can I get them from? Which ones are the best ones? Any other things worth bearing in mind? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Take care, Simon
What is the present value of this investment? My professor for my online class is basically useless. Please help me understand how to compute this. I have a financial calculator. And if you can tell me how, not just the answer. An investment offers $15,000 per year for 12 years. If an investor can earn 8.35% annually on other investments, what is the present value of this investment? If its current price is $110,000, should the investor buy it? I am putting PMT=15000, N=12, I/Y=8.35, PV=121,435.71; is that right??

How to calculate compound interest using calculator? monthly investment = 200, years = 40, interest rate = 8% total value at end of investment period = 648,000 M = final amt including principal P = principal i = interest n = no. of years invested Formula: M = P (1+i)n How can you do this using a calculator without having to calculate it each year? Sample below. At start: S = P After 1 period: S = P + Pr = P(1 + i) Amount at the start of this period Amount of interest earned during this period on the starting amount of this period Final value at end of this period After 2 periods: S = P(1 + i) + P(1 + i)i = P(1 + i)(1 + i) = P(1 + i)2 Amount at the start of this period, i.e., the final value at the end of the last period Amount of interest earned during this period on the starting amount of this period Final value at end of this period
How do you estimate what your capital gains tax would be on investment property? This is a difficult situation. We own a piece of undeveloped land in FL and are considering selling to put a down payment on a house in CA. We have owned it for about 14 years. My husband is military and a FL resident. We currently are stationed in CA and I am a CA resident. The land is a joint tenancy. FL doesn't have a capital gains tax, but CA does. So I am guessing that we have to split the gain 50/50 and have 50% taxed by the state of CA. We are trying to use an online capital gains tax calculator to figure how much we will have to pay. We had an assesment to pave the street. Would that be an improvement cost? Also, the state bought a small portion to widen a highway. Would the money they paid us be deducted from the basis? How do you come up with the depreciation? My property value has went up (according to the county assessment). How do you figure out what the tax rate is on the gain? I know this is tough one, but I appreciate all the help.
How to calculate this without having to use a calculator? Suppose you invest in an account that pays 6% interest, compunded quarterly. You would like your investment to grow to $8000 in 14 years. Is there an easy way to calulate interest rates without a calculator? Take for example a $ 100,000 @ 4% for 10 yrs would net what? After 10yrs the money would accumulate to approx $ 150,000 My question is if you are given the details (initial investment at a specific rate for a certain time period) is it possible to ballpark the amount increased ???
Are solar cells ever worth the investment? I used a solar power calculator on SharpUSA. And found that $50,000 worth of solar cells would save only $500 per year in costs. Is it possible to sell these kinds of new technologies? That would take 35 years to payback. With the economy about to break, how can we make the change, with 35 years payback? Man this isnt gonna work.
On calculators, which one is better for a HS student, TI84+SE or TI89? Consider long term investment.? I forget to add that she is planning of taking up medicine in college, would this help in giving me adeciding factor in answering my question? Know any good online interest calculators? So when you google around for investment calculators, there's a ton of results. The problem is that I can't find the kind or calculator that I need. I'm looking for one where I can put in a value for initial principal and an interest rate as well as figure out the value of the fund and interest where some of the money is spent every year. In other words, if I invest x and get y% interest but use y/2% or some other fraction of that interest to live, what would the value of that y/2% be from year to year and how much would the principal be worth from year to year? The math on this isn't difficult, its just tedious especially considering that I'd want to play around with the numbers some and I don't want to do it over and over. Maybe this would be just as easily done in an Excel or Google spreadsheet? I hope that made sense and I would greatly appreciate anyone who knows where something like this is or how to set up a spreadsheet appropriately.

Which is a better investment - 7% tax-deferred or 9% taxable? Assume: - I have a marginal tax bracket of 30% - I am investing for a 15-year time horizon. - Tax is paid yearly on taxable interest. - Tax is paid at end-of-term on tax-deferred interest. - The principal is not tax deductible. If you can provide a calculator for this kind of stuff, that would be appreciated as well. I am comparing corporate bonds in a Roth IRA vs. Prosper.com in a taxable account. To clarify. The Roth IRA is 7%. The fully taxable account is 9%.

How to calculate non-periodic rate of return without Excel? I don't have Excel so I don't have the XIRR function readily available. It'd be nice to calculate the real rate of return on my investment portfolio with the stipulation that I've been depositing and withdrawing funds erratically. Does anyone know of a program I can try for free, or an online calculator that works? Thanks.
More Robust 401K Calculator? I have been searching the web for calculators that calculate savings/401K or what have you. I have ran into numerous calculators but are very limited. Here is one scenario i am looking to calculate: I contribute $X bi-weekly (x% of my pay) and my company matches $1 for 1$ upto x% (although I contribute a little more than the match). I also know I average X% growth per month per investment. Also my company pays the match quarterly and not each check. Which our fiscal year is Jan - Dec. Is there an excel spreadsheet or calculator thats highly versitile and allows me to calculate on the conditions above? I know there are times I want to project a certain investment 6 - 12 months ahead to see if I should invest somewhere else, add more to this investment or leave it alone. I have to manually do it by hand and this gets tedious.

I can't figure out this equation to calculate future investment value? "Calculate the future investment value based on the following formula. future investment value = investment amount x (1 + monthly interest rate) number of years x 12 For example, if you entered an amount of $1000, annual interest rate of 3.25%, and number of years of 1, the future investment value is 1032.98." Some additional information: I asked my instructor about this but he was very vague, he mentioned something about taking taking the interest rate, dividing that by 12 (for the 12 months in a year) and adding 1 to the result (I'm not sure why I'm adding 1, maybe for the year?) and then multiplying that to the investment amount and that gives you the result-- except it doesn't, if I apply that formula to the above equation results my answer is way off from what is expected which is why I'm saying my instructor was being vague, or explained it incorrectly. Please help! I fail at math miserably so if you could really dumb it down for me that would be great. By "dumb it down" I mean explain it to me step by step how you would input that equation into a calculator and get the correct result. This equation has had me baffled for three hours! Thanks for your help! It's important for me to understand how this equation works because I'm a programming student and I need to implement this equation into my program, it can't be done without a thorough understanding of how it works.
What is a better rental investment plan 15 or 30 yr loan? Putting 20% down should I either get a 15yr loan or a 30 yr loan. The property would cost about 170K and would rent for conservatively $1000 a month. Putting the #'s into the calculator below http://www.finance.cch.com/sohoApplets/MortgageRentvsBuy.asp On the 30yr loan my value of investment goes into negative even though the rent would carry my mortgage costs. However, when I do the 15yr my value of investment is really high but, I would have to bleed a few hundred dollars each month. (which i can afford) I preface this with I don't really understand home equity loans but, at 24 I would like to maximize my money for the long-term in the best way possible.
Real Estate Investment? My girlfriend and I are set to get married in the fall - we have both graduated college and work white collar jobs @ $52,000 & 45,000 - annually. (We both are going back to graduate school in NY) We currently rent in Manhattan @ $1,700 a month. Would it be worth the investment to purchase a foreclosed townhouse @ 1.5 million in a neighborhood that is surely getting gentrified? I am in the field of architecture so I plan on cutting out the cost of hiring an architect to upgrade. Our two families combined will help us with the down payment - according to the rent vs buy calculator - buying never benefits us - but how could throwing out almost $20,000 to rent be any better?
Present Value of an Investment? What is the present value today (i.e. at time zero) of an investment which pays $200 every second month, forever, with the first cash flow occurring two months from now. C/Y and P/Y = 6 PMT = 200 i = 8% N = 999 FV = 0 CPT -> PV = 14,999.97 Could someone please explain how to solve this problem??

Below is the question- I just cant seem to figure out how to show for the rates given below as solution using a BA II calculator or any other financial calculator. Tough finance question dealing with rate of return, bond price and holding period yield? I have tried to answer the following three questions with my BA ii calculator but cannot figure them out. Can someone tell me how to figure out the questions below, using a BA ii calculator? Thanks very much --- The YTM on a bond is the interest rate you earn on your investment if interest rates don't change. If you actually sell the bond before it matures, your realized return is known as the holding period yield (HPY). Please answer to two decimals. a) Suppose that today you buy a 7.5 percent coupon bond making annual payments of $737. The bond has 17 years to maturity. What rate of return do you expect to earn on your investment? b) 4 years from now, the YTM (yield to maturity) on your bond has declined by 1.40 percent, and you decide to sell. What price will your bond sell for? c) In part B, what is the HPY (holding period yield ) on your investment?
Mortgage Broker or Mathematician please help? I am looking for the formula / method to use to calculate percentile returns over a given period of time - e.g. if a £100 000 investment had a 10% growth PA, how do you work out its value in a given number of years without doing the sum year by year?
